Live in Japan '66 captures The Beach Boys during their January 1966 tour of Japan, performing at Sankei Hall in Osaka. While Brian Wilson remained in Los Angeles crafting Pet Sounds, the touring lineup — Mike Love, Al Jardine, Dennis Wilson, Carl Wilson, and Bruce Johnston — delivered a spirited set that blends surf-rock staples, pop covers, and fan favourites. Broadcast on NHK Radio and later released unofficially by Rox Vox in 2016, this CD offers a raw, energetic glimpse into the band’s international appeal during a pivotal moment in their evolution. The release includes background notes, rare images, and a bonus interview recorded in Japan. It’s a curious mix — the inclusion of “Monster Mash” and “Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow” in the same set as “California Girls” and “I Get Around” really underscores the band’s transitional phase.
